Right Hand Chord Piano

Dave, your coach You see, there is some great benefit to this "right hand chord piano" concept over the way most individuals initially learn how to play "chord piano."

There are three basic elements that exist in the music you enjoy listening to and playing. They are:

  • Melody
  • Harmony
  • Rhythm
Now, when it comes to playing harmony, there is no rule that says "harmony" must be played with your left hand. Yet, this is how most of us learn during our initial involvement with piano... and to take this further, some of us never get beyond this limitation! Often, this is because we were not explosed to a teacher (or anyone else, for that matter) who was able to introduce us to more interesting possibilities. It's even quite possible that the teacher(s) you were studying with did not understand beyond that concept of "playing chords with the left hand and melody with the right."

Well, this is all changing for you now. Furthermore, I would like to present a basic truth to you and it's this: this is nothing wrong with playing chords with your left hand... but when you master this "right hand chord melody" principle, you'll be able to use both methods for wonderful added variety in your playing. Truly, you will add a whole new dimension to your piano playing!

One of the terrific advantages to using the "right hand chord melody" approach is that you have the luxury of freeing up your left hand to play more interesting things, such as including a bass line. Talk about adding dimension to your piano playing!

Think about it...

You are playing the melody with your right hand... you are also playing the harmony with your right hand. In addition, your right hand is doing some interesting rhythmical activities - such as "strumming" as a guitarist would do. Add that left hand "bass player" and you've got an entire band whenever you want it... how great is that!
