Great!
Now that you have a handle on these three primary chords in the key of
C Major, I would like to devote some time to allowing you to have a
little fun...Please take another look at this lead sheet for Amazing Grace: ![]() (If you are not a
"reader," simply follow along with the audio animation below)
At this point in time, I
would like you to print this lead sheet
and take it to your piano.
Also, have a pencil handy and circle those notes that have the longest
duration in each measure. As you can see at a quick glance, the
majority of these will be half notes. You see, by doing this you have
answered the first question, "What is the melody note
that I
am harmonizing?"The next action I want you to have fun with is to consider the three positions for each of the three chords - Cmaj, Fmaj, and Gmaj - and know that you are going to put them to use. Starting at the beginning, look at your first circle... okay, answer that next question, "What is the chord I am playing?" The next question to ask is "Is the melody note in the chord?" You will find, in this song, that the answer is "yes" every time. And, now, answer this: "What chord tones will I use to play below this melody note?" Since each melody note that you circled is in the chord, you now know that playing the chord position of the chord you are playing which has the melody note on top will automatically provide you with the notes you'll want below this melody note! What I would like you to do is to actually take your time and apply the appropriate chord position which keeps that melody note on top. Just a little mention here: you only need to be playing with your right hand at this point. ![]() Please visit me here as I provide a short segment which explains this process Only
